The New Overconsumption: The Trend of Excessive Accessorising Bags

I think I have spotted fashion’s version of the Stanley Cup. In the ever-evolving world of fashion, new trends constantly emerge—too many, in my opinion. The latest craze sweeping across TikTok, Pinterest, and Instagram involves the over-the-top accessorizing of handbags.

This trend, characterized by an abundance of charms, chains, and various other adornments, has garnered a significant cult-like following. However, as someone who appreciates the aesthetic value of a well-designed bag, I find this trend hideous. It not only detracts from the elegance of the bag itself but also makes it look loud and, frankly, tacky.

Over the past year, social media platforms, particularly TikTok and Instagram, have seen a surge in content related to bag customization. Influencers and everyday users alike are showcasing their unique and often excessive approaches to accessorizing their handbags. From dangling charms and colorful keychains to chunky chains and personalized tags, the trend seems to encourage an ‘anything goes’ mentality.

The allure of this trend is easy to understand. For many, it represents a way to personalize and stand out in a sea of similar-looking bags. It allows individuals to express their creativity and personal style. In a digital age where individuality is often celebrated, this trend has naturally gained momentum. Yet, for all its appeal, there is a growing counter-narrative that views this trend as a form of overconsumption that borders on the absurd.

At its core, the trend of excessive bag accessorizing highlights a broader issue in contemporary fashion: the culture of overconsumption. The constant need to buy new accessories to keep up with the trend perpetuates a cycle of waste and unnecessary spending. Moreover, it undermines the craftsmanship and design of the bags themselves.

Handbags, especially those from high-end designers, are often meticulously crafted with a particular aesthetic in mind. The design, materials, and craftsmanship are carefully chosen to create a cohesive and elegant product. When a bag is overloaded with accessories, it loses its original charm and sophistication. Especially seeing how Birkins are ruined, and it’s not in a Jane Birkin cool way or like the Olsen twins. It’s just clumsy and tacky. The focus shifts from the bag’s design to the gaudy assortment of trinkets hanging from it. This not only diminishes the beauty of the bag but also disrespects the artistry involved in its creation.

Another significant issue with this trend is the sheer loudness it brings to what should be a complementary accessory. A handbag is meant to enhance an outfit, not overshadow it. When covered in excessive adornments, a bag becomes a distraction. The result is a look that is cluttered and chaotic rather than chic and stylish. This kind of over-the-top accessorizing can make even the most sophisticated outfits appear tacky. There is really nothing cute about it. Unless you’re a child, a personalized bag doesn’t slide.
